Andorra under own steam - help?

A lot of the budget airlines go to Toulouse and car hire is cheap. I reckon on around £500 to get 4 adults to Pas de la Casa or Soldeu. Anyone done it? Hoping to go Feb 09 but can%26#39;t seem to be able to book a hotel on any site? Is this because its simply too early? Anyone done it under their own steam and can offer any advice please. Many Thanks.

Hi,

I%26#39;ve done it a few times, it%26#39;s v.easy.

You can get cheap flights to reus, barcellona and girona also to perpignon, car hire is cheap, drive is simple, about 3 hours.

Make sure you have, or get snow chains, just in case.

It%26#39;s too early to book hotels at the moment, the Grandvalira website has a Hotel booking facility which I%26#39;ve found cheaper than the other usual options, but all of the main booking websites have accomodation in the area.

Cheers.

The drives from BCN or Toulouse are the easiest. Girona has a lot of mountain passes to navigate and it is not easy finding the correct road from the airport. Don%26#39;t forget BA fly Gatwick to Toulouse. We used them this year as it worked out cheaper than Ryanair or Easyjet.

Post nearer the time and I will recommend a couple of car hire agents. Expect to pay around €250 for a Mondeo or similar. Make sure you know if they charge extra to take the car out of the country.

Dear Mr Cellophane%26#39;

Sorry to gatecrash the original query - but we will be travelling from Perpignan to Andorra, and then on to San Sebastian in September 08. Could you please advise of car rental companies you mention? We are hoping to catch some stages of the Vuelta while we are there. Any idea how this will affect driving conditions? We are trying to weigh up car rental and driving ourselves versus hiring a private minibus (which is expensive).

Never heard of Vuelta. What is it, some sort of Tour de Spain ;-)

I use www.carrentals.co.uk or www.carhire3000.com. They are both car hire brokers. They do deals with the major firms - Hertz, Europcar, Budget etc so you will be dealing with a reputable firm with top quality cars. The only problem you will have is the difficulty in finding a firm which will allow you to pickup in one country and drop in another. Some of the smaller firms also ask for extra insurance for driving between countries.

Mr Cellophane,

Thanks for that info. The Vuelta a Espana is indeed the Tour of Spain - significant road bike race with all the pro European teams. It has tough mountain stages through the Pyrynees( and the rest of Spain) hence our visit to Andorra and Northern Spain.
