family snow / ski holiday

hi

we are a family of 3 with a 12 year old daughter and would like to try and fit in a couple of days in the snow when we travel to europe in aug/sept

we cannot ski but thought it would be fun for all of us to have a go

we are not sure where to go but we would be restricted as we may have to catch a train and will need to hire most of the stuff and if it is too costly then forget it!!

we really need good ideas about where and what would suit us best - any place in europe is worth suggesting at this stage

help!!

cheers

The snow in Andorra arrived this year in mid February. Normally you may get to ski at Christmas.

If you want to ski in September in Europe, there are some resorts which have skiing all year, but these are mainly only suitable for advanced skiers.

Best place to ski in August is New Zealand or Chile

Hello Deb!

Wonder where in Adelaide you are? Been there many times myself - used to be a Radio Officer with P%26amp;O - running out to Oz and New Zealand!

Anyway - skiing! You are either being optimistic - or have to be a darned good skier to ski anywhere in Europe in August or September! Most of the Ski Resorts throughout Europe don%26#39;t open up until a week or so before Christmas - and even then only if they have sufficient snow. 2006 into early 2007 was a particularly bad time - and many of the resorts have suffered very badly.

My Son and I went to Italy (Courmayeur - on the Italian side of Mont Blanc) in January - and on some days the temperature was into the mid-teens - far too high to keep the snow in a ski-able condition! By lunchtime some days it was very slushy!

I have however, been to Tignes, France, in August where I did ski. On the top of this Resort, there is the Grande Motte Glacier - which is open from seven in the morning until one in the afternoon - by then it%26#39;s getting very slushy in the hot afternoon sun - even at ten thousand feet. You will however need to be a proficient skier - it is a huge, long red run - and hardly the sort of place you would want to learn to ski! Apart from that, there are a few places in Switzerland, all very high, but again all suffering with %26quot;slush%26quot; problems by lunchtime.

If you want to travel to Europe in order to Ski - end of January up until mid-march is probably the best time. Otherwise you%26#39;ll have to enjoy the summer sunshine instead!

Hope this helps!

Vince.

when you get back to AUS, go to the Snowy Mountains, I had a great skiing holiday there once, and that is the part of the world where one WOULD expect snow around that time of year!

There is also great skiing in Argentina in August!
