Buying Boots and Skis

Hi,

Does anybody know if it is cheaper in Pas de la Casa to buy boots and skis than in the UK?

|||

In my experience its a bit mixed. I got a great bargin on some really nice boots a couple of years ago but when I was there this year there seemed to be less deals around. I think it%26#39;ll depend on which time of year you%26#39;re going. I found clothing to be more expensive than the UK - but its a captive market so its almost to be expected! Try some of the smaller shops up the side streets and away from the piste for the best deals rather than the main sports shop in the centre of town.

|||

It definitely is if you buy late in the season.

Hotel Envalira

Hi can any one tell me how to contact this hotel directly as i would like to book again.

thanks

Hotel Envalira.

|||

This Hotels popular isn%26#39;t it? I was gonna stay here in Feb but they couldn%26#39;t do the first night of our holiday. Gutted. Why is it so good? everyone raves about it. I was booking them through skichalets.co.uk or theholidaygroup.com. You can try ringing the hotel, but they never seem to answer. +376 (0) 855 095

Hotel Els Cims

Is thid place as bad as it seems? it sbaout the only affordable hotel with availability at the moment.

|||

yeah thats what I%26#39;d like to know too

Paradis Blanc

Hi all,

Anybody stayed in the Paradis Blanc appartements? are they any good? i hear they are next to the slopes... are they also next to the bars? :)

|||

These apartments are basic but quite adequate. xlnt access to slopes. Pas has many bars and the ground floor of most apartment blocks probably has a bar, club , restaurant and a few shops. Paradis Blanc / Frontera Blanca are no different.

|||

Yeah I stayed here last year and they are low down the mountain so you dont have to walk far to get to anywhere. Close to the shops, bars, ski lifts, the nursery slope and ski school, and resort Ski Office. If you can get a room with a piste-view you can watch the slopes from your balcony which can be entertaining for obvious reasons. The apartment complex has lots of facilities on-site like ski hire, restaurants, arcade games, pool, bar, hairdressers!, laundarette, and the complex is very clean. Also the staff are friendly. Be warned you have to pay a large cash deposit on arrival for damages cover, and you have to empty your own bins!! Overall I would recommend. If you need any more info about Pas de la Casa let me know and I%26#39;ll try to help!

Hey Stuffhappens, know anything about getting snowboard lessons in Pas? Any idea what El Cims Hotel is like?

Hen weekend in Newquay

Hi everyone

I am looking to go to Newquay the last weekend of June for my hen weekend and was hoping someone can suggest whats the best area to stay in that is near the beach and near the nightlife! Any sugesstions would be a great help!

|||

Nowhere in Andorra is near a beach

What to wear?!!!

Have never been skiing before and have got all the gear needed for skiing during the day, but was wondering what I should take to wear at night. We are staying in the Diana Parc wing of the Princessa Parc hotel on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis and were wondering whether it was necessary to dress for dinner, or whether most people still wore casual clothes. Can anybody help with this vital problem!!!

|||

Casual is the way to go. Jeans, t-shirts etc are what you%26#39;ll find most people wearing in the evening.

Speaking of the evening, Quo Vadis is a good bar if you like it lively (good for watching football as well). Ciscos is a great bar (in a cave) and I%26#39;ve heard good things about the food there. There%26#39;s also a good tapas bar at the top of the village next to the Rocky Mountain.

Don%26#39;t get your hopes up about the food on the slopes, it%26#39;s all pretty poor. The only exception is %26quot;The refuge%26quot; located next to the Arinsal mid-station. It%26#39;s the one to go for, get a table outside, relax, and enjoy the view!

Arinsal is a very laid back resort

|||

I would agree with Cheshire Boarder, we stayed at the Princessa Parc in Jan 05 and it%26#39;s certainly a very relaxed place. I didn%26#39;t see anyone really dressed up for dinner, jeans are more than acceptable. I%26#39;m pretty sure the Diana Parc shares the restaurant with the Princessa. Casual is pretty much expected throughout the resort so don%26#39;t worry too much about dressing up, if you venture out in the evenings you%26#39;ll probably need your ski jacket anyway due to the temperature. The hotel%26#39;s bar, Bogarts, is a great night though, they have live music nearly every night of the week, and certainly very popular. If you%26#39;ve never skied before you%26#39;ve chosen a great place to start. We%26#39;ll be back in two weeks time for our second visit. Good luck.

Accommodation in Soldeu - recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a hotel or apartment for a group of 9, ideally in Soldeu? We%26#39;re all about 30-35 age bracket. Looking at Feb 12th to 17th but several places seem fully booked and/or v expensive.

|||

I have been to Soldeu several times. The Sport and Piolets are good and are in the Centre of the Town but have become expensive. The Euro Esqui is excellent and a good deal cheaper. It%26#39;s between Soldeu and El Tarter, about 1k from Soldeu but the Hotel runs a mini bus in the Evenings. we%26#39;re going back to this Hotel next week.

12 -17 Feb is half term so Soldeu will be seething and prices at a max. Also almost certainly %26#39;full%26#39; so probably lucky to get anything at such short notice. Sorry.

Different week would be my advice if you have any choice in the matter,

|||

We have just returned from a week in Soldeu staying at the Soldeu-Maistre. We were a group of 10 and it was perfect as there was a buffet evening meal so everyone had choice. The staff were ultra helpful and the cleanliness was next to godliness! And the bar was cheap if you wanted a quiet night in! It is about a 3 min walk from the gondola and right in the centre of Soldeu so perfect for nights out. Highly recommend for a group.

|||

try nordic in el tarter. its ski in and out and full of brits

|||

Hotel Nordic Is absolutely AMAZING! we were staying in Hotel Xalet and my friends In the Nordic and I have to say Xalet looks like something that you would find on the bottom of your shoe compared with the Nordic. for example the Nordic has a Games room with pool tables, air hockey, a bowling alley and most importantly it%26#39;s own bar. and to top it all off they have a Rolls Royce in the lobby! You can wake up in the morning have a fantastic brekky and step out of the door directly onto the ski lift and be up the mountain in about 7 minutes... TOP NOCH NORDIC!

Ski Hire

It%26#39;s our first time in Soldeu, can anyone suggest the best place to hire equipment, and what%26#39;s a good price?

|||

Head down to the gondola, by The Villager pub on the main street. By the gondola queue is Ski Calbo. The Calbo family seem to run Solodeu!!! The people in there are really helpful. Price depends upon what you want, but about 70 euros for skis and boots for the week.

Babies in Soldeu

My husband and I want to spend a week in Soldeu in March 2006. We have heard conflicting stories about whether there is a nursery which takes babies form 12 months or 24 months. Our daughter will be 14 months at the time of travel and we want to obtain information on the creche/nursery. Where is it, from what age can the kids go, opening times and prices. Any information (like email contact details etc for the nursery) would eb appreciated. Many thanks C

|||

Hi, I am also interested in a creche, has anyone come back to you regarding this query?

|||

Have been to soldeu and am afraid have seen nor heard about any nursery there. sorry.

|||

There is a creche type facility in Soldeu. Try this link for more info:

www.grandvalira.com/gv/main.aspx…

Lift Pass

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew how much a lift pass for a week is in Pas. I know its around £85 in Soldeu but I have heard its nearer £120 in Pas.

Please can someone tell me its not true?

Sam

|||

You can actually choose which ski pass you get in Pas. There is a cheaper %26#39;restricted%26#39; one and a more expensive %26#39;Grand Valira%26#39; one which gives access to the whole area. The Grand Valira pass is ~£115 this season. I guess it depends on your ability and how much skiing/boarding you plan to do. The folk at the lift pass office will be able to advise.

Have fun!

|||

Hey Weeangel, its sinner here, the one who wants to lead you astray, can you get daily upgrades for the week lift pass for Pas to go to other areas in Gran Valira like Grau Roch?

|||

I%26#39;m pretty sure you can get upgrades on a daily basis...last year I think someone in my ski class did that and it seemed to work pretty well but I%26#39;m afraid I don%26#39;t know how much it would cost. There are plenty of runs with the basic pass so it probably depends on if you%26#39;ll be out 9am-5pm or if you%26#39;ll be suffering the after-effects of leading people astray the night before!

|||

The Grandvalira pass covers the whole of Pas, Grau Roig, Soldeu and El Tarter. We just paid €175 for 6 days. The Pas/Grau Roig pass is only available as a 1 day pass I think but doesn%26#39;t provide as good value as the whole pass.

Check out this site:

www.grandvalira.com/gv/main.aspx…

beginner - ski or board?

It will be my first skiing holiday at the end of Feb, I%26#39;m going with a girl friend who is an intermediate skiier, and I%26#39;ll be on my own on baby slopes! I need to decide whether to learn to ski or board (so I can book equipment in advance). Which would be more rewarding? I fancy boarding but is it unrealistic unless you can already ski?

We%26#39;ll be staying at the Magic Pas which looks like a good choice (what%26#39;s the food like?). We%26#39;ll also be up for a bit of nightlife, so would be grateful for any recommendations.

|||

Ski

If you board you will never get to be with your GF. If you learn to ski, you could be off the nursery slopes by the 3rd day and lesson don%26#39;t last all day. You could be on blue runs with her by the end of the holiday.

|||

Don%26#39;t worry about booking equipment in advance. Pas has quite a few places which all offer ski hire, all by the slopes. Stick to skis, fewer wrist injuries!!!!! Don%26#39;t let your rep sell you all kinds of rubbish on the coach and don%26#39;t fall for the %26#39;they charge extra for credit cards in Andorra%26#39; rubbish. All the ski hire places and ski pass booths are staffed with really helpful people. One word of advice, they often want to see ID if you pay a large amount by credit card, so take your passport with you on the first day. Try the Olympiades for a cheap, slope side lunch!!!!

|||

fabulous - thanks! Really excited.

Airport Transfers

Hi, I%26#39;am stayin in Pas de la Casa this feburary and was wondering if anyone could recommend a company to get an airport transfer with? We are flying to Toulouse and staying in Pas de la casa.

Hope some one can Help!

Sam.

|||

try www.skihopper.com

|||

Yeah I tried that it only offered taxis, I was hoping for shuttle so I could get it cheap!

But thanks for the reply.

Anymore suggestions would be great!

|||

You can get a train from Toluouse to Hospitalet where you can get a bus to Pas de la Casa, thats probably the cheapest option. Try the SNCF website

|||

I know I am asking quite a lot of questions, sorry, but do you or anyone else know how easy it is to get to the station and if its possible to book a bus from hospitalet to pas de la casa?

Thanks for your suggestion!

|||

OK I have been checking the trains out and Novatel which is very cheap but the main problem is my flight gets in just a little too late for either of the early services, I wouldnt get in till around 9pm with either. Can anyone also suggest an alternative airline that goes to toulouse, other than easyjet.

|||

Ryanair? You can fly to Barcelona as well. Personally I%26#39;m fyling to Perpignan and hiring a car, driving over the Pyranees via the Envilira pass should be spectacular, might see a face or two worth a quick climb on the way

|||

Sounds nice! Unfortunatly none of us have beeen driving long enough to hire a car. I think im going to go with a private taxi one way and a bus the way back.

Thanks for your Help!

|||

No problem, when you going?

|||

We are going on the 4th of feb for a week. Should be fun. Ive never skied before so I%26#39;m likely to break something. When are you going?

|||

God thats a popular date, no wonder the hotels are pretty full. Everyone on this Forum seems to be there then, including me. Maybe I%26#39;ll see you there, where are you staying?

Ski hire

Anyone got advise / comments ?

Have Reserved skis on net with Ski shop at Sandy IV, Pas de la casa.

Since booking and paying 10% deposit they have change their web site and I cant seem to get an answer to e.mails.

Had chat (in broken English) with chap on phone who seemed as helpfull as a brick, and said I had to discuss with tour rep when we arrive? Dont want to get stuck with big bill.

Any reps / ex reps out there to reasure me that family wont get disapointed ?

|||

Hi

I%26#39;m an ex rep from Soldeu.. I cant be of much help i%26#39;m afraid.. I would suggest you call the tour operator and explain the situation prior to leaving as it can be very difficult to get things sorted quickly when you arrive and you dont want to miss any days... once you have the booking print out you SHOULD be ok....

|||

Hi

Thanks for that. I have got the Reservation number, so I%26#39;m hopfull this could resolve any problem. Its%26#39; the first time we%26#39;ve been away as a family skiing and I just want everyone to have a good time. Thanks for the answer.

cal ruiz

going at new year to the hotel does anyone know what it is like how far from slopes etc

|||

5/6 minutes. In fact everything is 5/6 minutes!

|||

I agree everything in Pas is 5/6 mins....but it does depend on if its an %26#39;up%26#39; for a %26#39;down%26#39; for those 5/6 mins!

|||

It is situated by the bus terminal so very handy for when you first arrive, as most hotels you have to walk up hills to get there as buses are banned from the centre of town. You will have to walk 5 minutes up hill to get to the slopes, I would recommend getting a ski locker as its horrendous in your boots. You are surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants. Overall the Cal Ruiz is a nice hotel, but I wouldnt say it was worth the 4 stars (gets it for facilities I think). There are loads of great places to go for New Years, I spent new year in a bar called Underground and it was great, brilliant party atmosphere - Flugels galore!!!!

|||

Hi Italy Queen, you sound like you live in Pas de la Casa or know it very well at least. Can you recommend a good, reasonable hotel to stay in? I am coming there in February, I am looking at Els Cims, Refugi dels Isards and Envalira. Also places to eat, drink and any good parties you know of would be appreciated, thanks

|||

Hi tesco

now you%26#39;ve returned. what did you think of the cal ruiz. were thinking about going there in feb.

ski hire prices

Thanks to RedRose49er. I should have asked, how much is a ski pass in Soldeu, and does the price vary or is it standard everywhere in Soldeu

|||

Ski pass for the whole Grandvalira is €175/€180 depending on low or high season. Can be bought direct from the gondola station in Soldeu, dead easy to find, just follow everyone!! When you go to buy your pass take your passport as they like to see ID with credit card purchases. Don%26#39;t let your rep (if on a package) con you into paying a credit card surcharge on the coach, these are not applied when buying direct.

|||

Try going to www.snowrental.net - they always seem to be cheaper when booking beforehand.

|||

oops sorry. wrong thread - that website was for ski hire.

Hotel Envalira in Pas de la Casa in Andorra

Has anybody stayed at the Envalira and can give me some more info on it please, as I am staying there at the end of February and don%26#39;t know much about it.

|||

Hi its a good basic hotel right at the bottom of the lifts excellent lacation. all you need out there.we are going there again 3rd visit with 12 of us.

|||

Hey. I have just come back from Pas and Envilira. First impressions I wasn%26#39;t too excited, but really it is great for a near to slopes hotel. The rooms are quite basic, if you like a cup of tea take a travel kettle and some cups! Get in touch and ask for a piste view. We had a back street room, which was OK, but when we saw someone eklse with a room at the front with piste view we were very jealous, it is amazing and looks out tight across the foot of the slopes. The hotel is hot, but we couldn%26#39;t leave our window open at night cos of noise from people coming out the clubs in the street behind. A front room is the answer, and we were told we didn%26#39;t get one because we didn%26#39;t request it. So get requesting... Honestly we are thinking of going back next year and would happily stay there. It isn%26#39;t 5 star but fine and a brilliant location!

New to Andorra

Hi I hope some one out there who has visited Andorra many times can help?

We live in France and are hoping to take our family skiing to Andorra for the first time. My husband and I have skied in Austria before and love the apres ski, culture etc as much as the skiing.

Is Andorra therefore the place for us and which village will cater for our needs as we dislike concrete purpose built resorts.Better still any hotel offering lots of facilites for two very sporty daughters?

Will there be much snow in the first week in March and does any one know of a good catered chalet for friends?

Many Thanks!

|||

Pas de la Casa is a great resort...but it most definitely is a purpose built and all concrete and is not at all pretty in the traditional Austrian ski village way. However, it offers great ski-ing/boardng and great nightlife so...

Hopefully someone else will be able to comment on Soldeu and Arinsal.

|||

We%26#39;ve been to Soldeu 6 times now and have just booked again for Feb. I would heartily recommend Soldeu to anyone, especially either the Sport Hotel or Sport Village (the best of the two). These are quite expensive by Andorran standards but cheaper than the Alps. The Granvalira ski pass offers access from Soldeu over to Pas de la Casa, keep most people busy all week! Pas was once described to me as %26#39;Blackpool on snow%26#39; and whilst this is a little harsh it does lack a bit of culture. I%26#39;m not too sure about chalets in Soldeu, it tends to offer either hotels or apartments.

|||

I have looked at the Sports Hotel but when reading the reports they have not always been very positive. Have you stayed there and do you book direct as I can%26#39;t see us finding a package holiday for the hotel here in France? Is Soldeu also a %26#39;Blackpool in the snow?%26#39;

|||

The Sport Hotel is really nice, true 4 star. Stayed there over Christmas just gone, no complaints. Booking direct can be a pain, they don%26#39;t really like dealing with the British direct but Spaniards seem to be able to book direct. They have a brochure on the reception written in just French and Catalan. Maybe giving them a ring direct or trying their website (grupcalbo.ad - I think) might be OK, especially if you can sound French. Otherwise it is a package deal. Soldeu is a pleasant little place, strung along the main road leading down to Andorra la Vella. Everything is within walking distance of the gondola, except the village of Incles which is about a mile down the road. Soldeu is not as brash as Pas, plenty going on but a little quieter, but not %26#39;Blackpool on snow%26#39;!!!!

|||

Thank you for your replies! They have been really helpful as I have sat at my computer just going around in circles for months. I will phone with my best French accent and see if that works if not perhaps there is someone out there who lives in Europe and knows of a tour operator I could book with Thank you again!

|||

Hi 41cookie, we only booked Sport Hotel last week thru a great lady - heres her email address: tracy.hendrie@tarsc.net We have been on other holidays booked thru her, she%26#39;s so helpful and gets great deals. She is part of the co-op group %26amp; we found her via teletext. If you quote our name she will know how you found her (Marc %26amp; Tracey Hurst). We have never been skiing in Andorra either %26amp; after reading reviews, are very excited - leaving on 12 Feb with our 2 boys (13 %26amp; 15).

|||

Hi Redrose49er. We have booked our first skiing holiday to the Sport Hotel Andorra for half term 06 -12 Feb, should we hire our skis/boots once out there (read that Esport Calbo is the main ski shop) - also, where would we get our ski passes from, and would this be cheaper once in the resort.

Many thanks

|||

Hi there

Really easy to sort out ski hire in Soldeu, head for the gondola and you will find Ski Calbo, very helpful, lots of stock, good English. Ski pass will be €180 each for the whole Grandvalira, well worth it. The ski pass place is again by the gondola, head for The Villager pub and just follow everyone else down the ramp. Make sure you take your passport with you as they like to see additional ID when paying by credit card. At Christmas our %26#39;rep%26#39; told us to excpect to pay credit card surcharge fees of up to 4% in resort, must have thought we were green behind the ears to fall for that trick, it was his first week in Soldeu, our sixth. My advice, buy your pass the day you arrive to avoid any queues and sort your skis out either early Monday (9am ish) or leave it until about 10.30ish, therefore avoiding any queues.

For a break from the skiing take the bus down to La Vella, about €4 each way, stops outside the Pic Negre shop at about 10 past the hour. Again, take your passport if paying by CC.

Soldeu is a really great place, Sport is a lovely hotel. For a nicer evening try the Sport Village across the road. Iceberg from 4pm-6pm is a must for Happy Hour and try the Bruxelles or Slim Jims for lunch.

When returning to Toulouse take something to eat or drink, the airport is useless.

Can%26#39;t wait to get back there in February!!!!!

|||

Thanks for all your help rose49er. maybe c u on the slopes!

Jan or Feb?

I have been to Soldeu twice before and both times in january. The first time we had so much snow that an avalanche blocked the road on our transfer. The second time started off slowly with icey conditions, but soon enough snow to cause Avalanche warnings.

What is the snowfall generally like in Feb? I must admit I love plenty of powder over the icy conditions. Is there still plenty of snow in feb?

Furthermore - Does anyone know when the schools half term is next year?

Cheers

|||

snow-forecast.com/resorts/El-Tarter-Soldeu.s…

16cm forecast for Friday

I have another web site which give historical figures for everywhere except Andorra. You could look at Aux Les Thermes on www.skiinfo.com . That is about the nearest there.

Do you mean English or local school holidays ?

|||

Thanks for that.

Both sets of holidays would be good to find out as there are enough kids going down the runs at the end of the day without it being a school holiday!

|||

I found this which indicates that there is more variety next year and Feb half term is spread over Sat 10th to Sun 25th

Alaska Apartments

Hi, Just wondering if anybody has any info on the Alaska Ski apartments.

|||

Apart from all the info available in the usual ski holiday brochures and on the Alaska website what else are you looking for? I can say the apartments are very new, build in the last couple of years and are in a prime location. They%26#39;re not right on the piste (as the Olympiades is) but you don%26#39;t have to walk uphill to get to/from the slopes which is a big plus. Alaska is literally 2mins walk from plent of bars / restaurants and the Spar shop for the breakfast run as well. I%26#39;ve booked to stay there this season so I%26#39;m hoping they%26#39;re good!

|||

Just got back from week in Pas. Stayed in Alaska Apts. Really nice place, couldn%26#39;t fault it. Rooms v nice, bathrooms immaculate and apts cleaned daily. Excellent location, short uphill walk from main ski lifts (100m), have ski lockers but you can rent one right at pistes for about 17 for the week if you don%26#39;t fancy the walk.. have fun :)

|||

Hi Fransgone,

I%26#39;ve chose to stay in the alaska next month on this trip to pas. The brochure advertised a health spa but i%26#39;m told u have to pay for it. Do u know how much? someone said 10 euro, is that per trip???

thanks louise

|||

Hi we have just returned from Pas de la casa and stayed in the Alaska.... the studio rooms are extremly small you couldn%26#39;t swing a cat in them.. the hotel Manager was totally unhelpfull.... we actually booked to stay in an apartment and paid the suppliment for this (2people) but they put us in a Studio... didn%26#39;t check in for 2 hours and managed to get a slightly bigger room but still not what we booked (with Inghams)... check what rooms you have booked before you go.. other then that is in perfect location.. very clean... and Yes you do have to pay €10 for the spa each time you go....

oh by the way we got snowed in on our return supposed to be home on Sunday arrived home Monday night.

ski hire

we are travelling in february to Canillo, can anyone advise me if there is ski hire shops in Canillo or do you have to travel to El tarter or Soldeu. We are travelling with children- is the skiing in Canillo suitable for a beginner? what is the ski school like there? or should we travel over to another area- we have hired a car so could travel if necessary

|||

Hello

Have never stayed in Canillo but have been to Soldeu loads of times, the main road travels from Pas de la Casa, through Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo and down to Andorra la Vella. Ski hire etc is not a problem in Canillo and the resort is connected to the rest of the Grandvalira. Not sure about the tuition in Canillo but El Tarter and Soldeu are excellent and might be worth the short drive, easy parking in El Tarter, right next to the gondola. Canillo has a small skiing area and might be a bit restrictive for beginners who aren%26#39;t too comfortable on lifts. I%26#39;d possibly be tempted to drive up to El Tarter (5 mins), nice and wide and flat!!!!

Euro Esqui - ski and boot hire plu other advice please

Going for family skiing staying at Euro Esqui over New Year. Wish to hire skis and boots when we arrive. Can anyone recommend a hire shop near to hotel or which one in town is most convenient ? Also, we are intermediates, on first day should we head for El Tarter or Soldeu to get up into good skiing quickest ? ... Also, is their ski storage facility at slopes or must skis be stored at hotel each night ? Thanks

|||

Hi Skidooo,

I noticed you received no reply to your questions above, but I%26#39;m off to the Euro Esqui on Feb 12th and have the same questions as you - do you have any advice after your trip?

Thanks

Hello

Esqui is right between Soldeu and Tartar, if I remember rightly! Both are straight forward and just a short bus ride/longish walk away. Ski hire easy at both places and skis can be kept in lockers at the bottom of the gondola or at the top in Soldeu. Whatever you do, have fun, you%26#39;ll love it!!!

Hotel Confort

Has anyone stayed in the Hotel Confort in Pas de la Casa? Am staying there in Feb and was just wondering what its like?

|||

when in feb are you there lazy?

|||

We%26#39;re going this Sunday for a week. R u going to Pas?

pas de la casa feb 2006

anyone else off to pas in feb 2006? anyone know any information on hotel cristina, where its located? whats it like?

hope to hear any comments

|||

Hi Mad Skier

Me and 7 mates are going there on 15th Feb for a week. Were booked into anoher hotel but had to change to the Cristina %26#39;cos the twin rooms at the other place turned out to be doubles and whilst we%26#39;re mates, we%26#39;re not that close!

Looked at one website and apparently there%26#39;s a nightclub / disco in the basement.....not entirely happy but will have to wait and see i suppose. At least it%26#39;s close to lifts etc.

When are you going?

Mark

|||

we are going 5th feb and you? which hotel you suppose to be in? which company you going with?

|||

why do you complain about a night club in the basement , it is surely a gift from the mighty THOR !

|||

Hi,

Sorry don%26#39;t know anything about the hotel, but we%26#39;re also going to Pas on the 5th Feb! Which airport are you flying out from?

|||

hi lacy_lucy we are flying from manchester and you? which company you going with? which hotel you staying in? hope to hear back from you before we go!

|||

Hi,

We%26#39;re going from Gatwick on a flight at 8:30am. So its going to be a very early start for us as we%26#39;re coming from Reading! We%26#39;re staying in the Hotel Confort which no one else seems to have stayed in! Have you been to Andorra before?

|||

i havent been to andorra before my friends has just come back from the resort and says it is quality!!!! i seem to be the only one staying in our hotel too!!! we have a very early flight we fly at 6am so have to be at airport at 3am!!!!!!! Is there a group of you going? have you skied before?

|||

Ok u win on the early start!

There%26#39;s 5 of us going. We%26#39;ve all skiied before, although the others have only been twice. The very first time I managed to convince them to try skiing we went to Soldeu in Andorra which was pretty cool. Its a good place to learn. Have u ever tried boarding? I really want to give it a go but it does look quite hard! Not too sure about the stopping either!

How about u? R u a regular skiier? R u ski-schooling or free skiing?

|||

i have skied once ever year for 4years, i have never tired boarding i am unsure what it would be like because all i ever see is them stopping and sitting on the snow!!!!!!! we are free sking and you? we will have to try and meet for a drink if you want?

where you flying into?

|||

Yeah, sounds good! We%26#39;re flying into Toulouse and then getting a coach from there. Ski school is part or our package so I guess I%26#39;ll take advantage of lessons.

R u going with a group of people? What kind of ages r u?

I cant wait another year, I want to go back now! :(

Hi, Ive just returned from Pas De La Casa and it was fantastic! Stayed at the Olimpiades which coudn%26#39;t have been any nearer to the slopes!. All I can say is go to this resort its great, I cant wait to go back! And all of you about to go- have fun! -I%26#39;m jealous :(

|||

Hate to rub it in but I%26#39;m off on Sunday :-D We couldn%26#39;t get in at Olimpiades this year so we%26#39;re staying at Alaska Aparthotel. What were the snow conditions like when you were there? I was getting really worried until the big snow dump over the weekend!

|||

hi wee angel u of to pas on sunday same here!!! i cant wait i was like a bit worried about lack of snow until last suday!!! are u going with a company or have u booked it all yur sel? which irport u flying from?

|||

Hi, we%26#39;re flying into Gerona from Gatwick. Normally I fly into Tolouse but I think the transfers are about the same. We%26#39;re going package, mainly because my friend was wiped out on the first day last year and the tour operator was excellent re sorting out the insurance, trip back etc. Plus....I don%26#39;t think there%26#39;s anywhere in Pas to actually park a hire car if you did a %26#39;diy%26#39; job!

Have fun when you%26#39;re there!

|||

Don%26#39;t sat that, I%26#39;m arriving by car tomorrow. Driving over the pyranees on the snowchains. I%26#39;ll swing by your hotel on monday night and look you up. I%26#39;ll recognise you by your corruptable wings, right?

|||

Hrm....the t-shirt may be more of a give-away than the wings! Have a safe drive down and I%26#39;m sure parking will be fine!!

|||

i might see you i am also off sunday!!! and also flying into gerona, what company you with? what hotel you staying in? is there a group of you going?

|||

Snow conditions were fantastic! we had the best of both, bright sunny weather for the first four days and fresh new snow for the last two days. And it really did snow, it was at about meter when we left (a little too deep to board off the main piste- but it was fun!). Hope the conditions stay good and have fun!

|||

cheers hazey glad to hear you had a great time, i will try and do the same as yourself whilst i am there!!!!

|||

Hay everyone i%26#39;m going andorra on the 26th there%26#39;s ten of us going were staying in the lake placid hotels anyone now what there like? never been skiing before hopefully i%26#39;ll catch on quick any tips for first timers.

andorra first timer

Hay everyone i%26#39;m going andorra on the 26th there%26#39;s ten of us going were staying in the lake placid hotels anyone now what there like? never been skiing before hopefully i%26#39;ll catch on quick any tips for first timers

|||

Bend ze knees and lean forward. ;-)

|||

Thanks mate

|||

See you on the baby slopes! We%26#39;re going on the 26th too, my first time also. Really looking forward to it (and so is my mate so she can laugh at me!)

Arinsal Restaurants

Our party of ten experiences in the local Arinsal restaurants was very mixed.While one of the busines week%26#39;s of the year, it semms that the restaurants were just not able to cope with the demand, plus most of the waiters/waitresses seems to be half-zonked!!

Especially;

Surf Bar; Most hyped up %26amp; most disappointed. So called premium Argentian beef was as tough as leather. Service deplorably bad, mistakes with bill etc..would not recommend.

Ciscos; Best of the lot, if a little more expensive

Refugi a la Fondue; At top of village, worth the climb for a %26#39;special night%26#39; out. Try the Chilean Santa Digna red wine.

Casa Moli; Good on our first visit, disastrous on our 2nd visit, which was NewYears Eve-just couldn%26#39;t cope!!

|||

After just coming back from Arinsal and trying most restaurants in the village there were only three restaurants that I would recommend for dinner that were a cut above the pizza/pasta stakes:

1) Refugi a la Fondue - Brilliant Fondue and the starter of the week was the mixed Andorran starters to share. I recommend the Torres Vino Esmerelda. Located towards the top end of town past the Princessa Parc. Highly rated. http://www.refugi.net.tf/

2) The Tapas bar, La Tasca 5 mins uphill out of Arinsal. Authentic proper tapas and fabulous meat and cheese. Experiment with items on the menu or ask the waitress for advice. Again, we loved it here but didn%26#39;t discover it until the end of the week. www.arinsal.com/restaurants/…

3) Cisco%26#39;s. In the centre of Arinsal serves Tex Mex type food. I recommend the chilli but you%26#39;ll probably have to ask them to make it extra hot as the normal versions not spicy enough for us Brits. Same goes for the Fajitas. Good for kids.

The Surf Bar was far too chaotic and smoky for us to eat there although the big steaks looked good.

El Moli opposite the Gondola was good for lunch and as a late night bar.

Get from Girona to Andorra??

I%26#39;m planning to go to Soldeu in mid February and completely new to Andorra. We%26#39;re flying to Girona airport with Ryanair but I can%26#39;t find any way of transfer from this airport to Soldeu.

Can someone share some transfer tips? Otherwise we%26#39;ll end up renting a car.

|||

Girotransfer operate a fleet of taxis, minibuses %26amp; coaches covering all destinations including Andorra ski resorts. Tel +34 687 763 165 or in the UK +44 (0)844 837 3531.

Otherwise - We are going to Les Angles in France on the 11th. We normally rent a car and drive through Spain and cross the border at Bourge-Madame. This is the way to Andorra - we turn right in France and Andorra is left.

It is a pleasant, fairly easy drive, although it gets a bit windy as you get near France.

We get our car from Europcar, £174.29 for an intermediate (Mondeo type). This year we are going the longer way round via Perpignan as Ryanair moved our flight time from 6:10 to 11:40 and for us this is quicker, but not so nice.

|||

I am arriving in Girona and have booked a private bus through the internet site novatel. They also have public transport from Girona to Andorra lavelle but the bus leaves girona at approx 3.30 and we arrive at 10.30 am so we decided to hire a private bus. Cost is 700.00 euro return for 10 of us. Directly to our hotel and back to girona airport at the end of the week,

|||

We have just returned from Andorra, on the way there we went on the motorway system near to Barcalona, (A7 then C16 via Manressa towards Andorra) when you exit the Tunnel de Cadi(toll 9 euros) you can either go towards Pulgcerda or La Seu d%26#39;Urgell. If you don%26#39;t need chains go the first way if you need chains go via La Seu d%26#39;Urgell and get chains from one of the large Supermarkets just accross thr boarder.

On the way back we took the N152/C17, which the internet route finder said would be quicker,although more senic it will take longer, We hired our cars from Avis via a UK agency called www.suncars.com there were 8 of us and got 2 estates cars for 100 pounds each.

|||

Thanks for that rental site. We could have saved £20 this year. I have bookmarked it for the future.

|||

We%26#39;re going for a short break in march fully inclusive 4 day car hire for a Focus is £83.

Drive should be a pleasant 21/2-3 hrs.

RB - I was going to hire snow chains with the car - do you know how much they are to buy in the suoermarkets you mentioned ?

Thanks

|||

I have never found snow chains to rent in the Pyrenees. Car hire firms offer them on their web sites, but never have them. We bought a set 2 years ago and pray every year that the car has the same size tyres ;-(

Can%26#39;t remember how much they were.

Practice putting them on when you buy them. It will be much easier in a clear car park than in 3 inches of freezing snow.

|||

Update to my last post

We have a car rented from Europcar in Girona. I asked about chains for tomorrow and was told that they can rent them, but for next week it would be better to wait and see it we needed them and buy from a supermarket.

snowlakes apartments

We%26#39;re off to pas on the 26th. wondered if anyone had stayed at these apartments. If so what are they like? Also do you need photos for the lift passes?

|||

The entire Pas area operates electronic or remote passes so no need for embarrassing passport photo%26#39;s anymore!

|||

Hi, we will be staying in snowlake for the week as of tomorrow....I%26#39;ll let you know when I get back!

Reial Pirineus - as bad as the reviews? Help!

I%26#39;ve just been told that the Magic Pas has been over booked, and Thomson are now asking us to transfer to Reial Pirineus, but the reviews are dire!

Has anyone been recently, and does it have any redeeming features?

I%26#39;m thinking of possibly cancelling the holiday, or asking to be moved to a different resort in Andorra. I%26#39;m really disappointed as this was to be my first skiing holiday, I was really looking forward to it.

|||

You and me both! No option other than to go but not at all happy about it and will put the holiday under great scrutiny with a view to a compensation claim.

|||

I%26#39;m sorry to hear you%26#39;re in the same boat as us. We have been offered a small sum of compensation, but like you, if the accommodation is of an unreasonable standard I will be making a further claim.

I can%26#39;t believe the arrogance of tour operators, and to be told this is the only accommodation available in the whole of Andorra, it makes you wonder why!

It also has annoyed me that we paid £489 each for Magic Pas, and the difference in price on the web for the week beginning 12th March is £318 for Royal Pirineus. Its a total rip off.

We have accepted the change on the basis that we%26#39;ll be out as much as possible, and if its better than the reports then its a bonus. We are determined to have a great time!

Hotel Xalet (Crystal Ski)

About to book Xalet with Crystal can anyone give me a realistic idea of how far it is from the slopes or lifts? Got a gammy leg which is fine once I%26#39;m on a board, but not so good for walking!!

|||

5 - 10 mins max to gondolla. The hotel is just over the main road from the car parks.

Ski School

Can anyone tell me whether ski school is in the morning or afternoon and rough estimate of costs please?

Thanks

|||

Hi. I have read that you can choose either - 10 - 1pm or 1.30pm - 4.30pm (Mon-Fri); from previous experience, the mornings are usually better as, if it%26#39;s sunny all day, the lower slopes can get %26#39;slushy%26#39; in the late afternoons) have never been to Andorra though. I%26#39;m also interested in how much lessons are.. anyone Please!

|||

Check out www.grandvalira.com for everything you need to know about this excellent ski area.

Driving to Andorra

We are driving to Andorra from Barcelona in summer. What is the road like? Is it narrow and windy? Also we are travelling through to France from Andorra. What is the road like there? I have been trying to find information on the web but it is hard to find. We are from Australia where we drive on the other side of the road and am a bit anxious about driving on narrow, mountainous and windy roads.

|||

We are just back from Les Angles which is in France about 40 Km from Andorra. We flew to Girona and went via Perpignan (A7 - N116). This is the easiest way, being just 2 roads and mininal windy roads. Stop at the Super-U in Prades for supplies. We came back the %26quot;other way%26quot; across the boarder at Bourg-Madame then the N152 towards Girona. The E9 direct to Barcelona includes a 3 mile tunnel.

From a map our return route looks by far the windiest.

Except for the villages where parked cars and piled snow (not a problem in the summer) restrict the road width even the narrowest pass is wide enough. I have no problems in a rented car driving on the %26quot;wrong%26quot; side of the road.

|||

Thanks so much for your help.Your information was most encouraging. It sounds as though we should be right in summer.

Glad you had a good trip.

Cheers

Hotel Magic Pas?

Anyone recently been to Hotel Magic? Are all the facilities now available? Is the food any good? We%26#39;ll be staying for a week from 26th Feb.

|||

I havent been but would like to know more about the hotel also. My two friends and I will be there from the 26th Feb for a week hope to see you in the bar.

John s.

|||

Hi John, unfortunately we%26#39;ve now been moved to the Reial Pirineus due to Thomson overbooking. The reviews aren%26#39;t great, but I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll have a great time anyway.

Its my first time skiing, so my mate should get a laugh or two. Looking forward to the apres ski too.

Hol. When shall I go?

Hi, when would you say the slope conditions deteriorate and when does their season end?

We want to go to Arinsol soon. Maybe mid%26#39; March?

|||

the snow lasts till mid April and skiing is still good right up till then. Mid March sounds like a perfect time to go and everything is so cheap there.

Nicole

travelling next week how much snow at the moment

hi going snow boarding in a weeks time is there plenty of snow at the moment. also first time at this resort any tips? what is the night life like where is the best places to go .thanks

|||

snow-forecast.com/resorts/Pas-de-la-Casa.sht…

Photos for lift pass

Is it necessary to take passport sized photos for your lift pass? If so, how many?

Cheers.

|||

i got back 2weeks ago and the lift passes we used where the electronic ones with the chips so it picks it up on sensors. i didnt see anybody else with any other kind of pass.

|||

Great - cheers. Deb

Ski School

Can anyone tell me whether ski school is in the morning or afternoon and rough estimate of costs please?

Thanks

|||

There are classes from 10am and 1-30pm Monday to Friday, sorry but re prices, our lessons were part of a full package deal, so cannot give specific lesson prices, try searching %26#39;Nordic Hotel, El-Tartar-Soldeu%26#39; re ski hire and lessons.

Sport Village Spa Soldeu

Hi, i’m staying the Sport Village in March and am wondering if anyone knows what the tarrif is for the spa? Is it free to house guests? (There’s a wesite up but its in french i think?)

|||

Hi Murphy1,

We just came back from Soldeu and we stayed at the Sport Village for a week. Fantastic hotel and the buffet is absolutely delicious, both dinner and breakast!

We were dissapointed that the hotel doesn%26#39;t have a pool or sauna. You can use the spa which is just down the road but it will cost you as a guest around 23Euros for 3hrs. Beware the hotel will also charge you for the ski lockers which you share with another couple.

I%26#39;d reccommend the spa called Caldera (handy if you have a car to get there) not too far but there are meant to be just a great and lots cheaper!

Have fun in Soldeu.

|||

Thanks for that Londoneyes,

Sounds like the hotel was a good choice either way. I’ll be doing plenty of eating after my tough days on the slopes!

Soldeu

Arriving on 12th March 2006. Staying at El Xalet (I%26#39;ve read the reviews and will be keeping an open mind) Anway - Land at Toulouse at 10:30am local - fingers crossed should be in the resort by 14:00ish, so can anyone recommend a good bar to watch the England v France game .....

|||

Was there last year, there is a good bar down the road, think it is called the sports bar, when I was there it was showing english football. Me and my boyfriend have a same problem but in Pas de la Casa,

Ski in Ski Out

Can anyone recommend a hotel in pas de la casa that%26#39;s ski in ski out please? DO they even exist?

|||

I%26#39;m sure there%26#39;s more but Olimpiades is ski in ski out. It%26#39;s a 2star hotel thats usually rented by Panorama. It%26#39;s clean enough and you%26#39;re literally two steps (through the bar/restaurant tables) from the locker room to the piste! Failing that if you stay slightly away from the slope you can easily rent ski lockers on the side of the piste so you don%26#39;t have to carry all your kit to/from your hotel.

snowlake in pas de las casa - anyone been there?

hi all

just booked the snowlake for 31st dec !!!

has anyone been there?and whats the nightlife like on NYE????

cheers

c

|||

Hi just got back after a week in snowlakes. the apartments are fine,nice and clean. The bath is very small but showers work well. There are ski lockers in the basement for all your gear and it takes 3-4 mins to walk to the slopes. Plenty of restaurants and bars around, you should have a great time.

Xalet. Whats the deal??

Have booked Hotel Xalet (Crystal) going 12th March.

Mixed reports on it, has anyone just got back? How was the food?

Whats the easiest way to the slopes from the chalet, cant walk too well, how far to chair lifts? or should I get bus into soldeu? Does anyone know which would involve the least walking.

Or any other info that would put my mind at rest would be good.

Thanks for your help.

|||

Hi

just got back on sunday n stayed at the xalet. Food was good, staff excellent. Takes about 5 mins to get to ski lift so would advice storing skis at the bottom of these (about 20meters from lift). The ski conditions were excellent whilst I was there and was impressed with the number of pistes available. I had an excellent stay there and would thoroughly recommend it to people. Say Hi to Fabri (manager) and Steve when you go next week.

Enjoy your hols

Isobel

|||

Thanks Isobel,

Much happier now, we dont expect 5* but it wasnt looking good from the reports. Now we%26#39;re relly looking forward to going.

We are taking an Isobelle with us too.

Thanks a lot.

Take care.

Ski School

Can anyone tell me whether ski school is in the morning or afternoon and rough estimate of costs please?

Thanks

|||

We have been to Soldeu three times. Going again next week. Ski lessons are usually run in both the mornings and afternoons and lessons run for 3hrs (I think). Last time we went it wasn%26#39;t very busy, so they only ran the morning ski school.

Instructors are a mixed bunch. Some are really excellent. Many speak English as a first language. Can%26#39;t remember the cost, but not too expensive.

all lessons start and finish at the same location which is good if you are meeting up with friends and children.

Hope that helps.

First Timers

Hi Guys %26amp; Girls,

Me and my girlfriend are going boarding for the first time next week in Pas de la casa. We are staying at the Magic Pas hotel. Can anybody give us any advice on what to look out for and what not. Good sites and pubs/restaurants etc. Any tips would be much appricated as we havent got a clue what to expect!!!!!

|||

I would recommend getting a locker next to the piste, saving your tired arms and legs after a day boarding. If you%26#39;re with Thomson then their lockers are next to L%26#39;Husky just off the slope.

Big tip - look out for falling ice from roofs! Very dangerous!

|||

Hi Debs,

Thanks for the advice. Will make sure we def look out for the falling ice. Is there anything you can recommend for us to do in the day other thn skiing.

Thanks!!!

Which resort?

3 men going to Andorra for weeks skiing end of March, any suggestions on where to base ourselves for easy access to best slopes. which resort is best? Any advice on hotel/apartments on cheap and cheerful basis.

We are flying to Girona.

|||

I just went through this same process last week, trying to figure out where to stay. Every travel agent I spoke with said that it%26#39;s best to stay in Andorra La Vella and then go from there to a resort each day.

|||

i have heard it is a good idea to stay in andorra la vella, how long does it take to travel from A. la vella to pas de la casa or soldeu? Should we rent a car?

|||

It´s sounds like there are buses or some kind of public transportation from Andorra la Vella to the resorts. I asked about renting a car, but was told it wasn´t really needed.

|||

When are you going? I will be there from the 22nd, so I will try to post once I figure out how everything works there...

|||

We are going out on 21st, thanks for thinking of us. If anyone knows of a good value hotel in Soldeu thats close to all facilities it would be really helpful? Suggestions very welcome!

|||

Have you checked Expedia.com??

|||

I don%26#39;t agree that Andorra la Vella is the best place to stay for the slopes. We have been for the past 2 years and are going again in a few days. We stay in Canillo at the Roc Castell - a village great for families, lots of restaurants, amazing food/drink at the Swimming/Ice Rink centre/local Sports centre. Amazing 3-course menus for 12 euros. We can walk to the lifts.

For 3 men, I%26#39;d say Soldeu or Pas might be more appropriate for night-life etc. There is a good bus that runs along the valley floor connecting all the resorts. See www.grandvilara.com for more details. Have a great holiday.

|||

I´m starting to agree that Andorra la Vella is not the best place to stay. Just got in a couple of hours ago, the weather was terrible but we took a taxi up to the gondola that goes to Grand Valira. It was snowing up on the mountain, and poor visibility (someone recommended to get up early for better weather) so we ended up not going up. Took the bus back to Andorra la Vella. Now we´re trying to figure out whether to rent a car so we can go to different resorts, or what.

|||

replying on my husbands behalf as he is now also in Andorra. After much searching he found an apartment which seems great and is 2 mins from main gondola and very central in Soldeu. he def thinks he is in the best place. he has a hire car Ford focus estate which cost £113.00 for the week so can drive to other places if need be.

Hope the weather improves for you all,

|||

Where did he get that great rental rate?? Do you have an idea?? We just rented a car this afternoon (at a much higher rate, this is killing me now) and will be heading up to Arcalis tomorrow. Will report then!

Non Skiers

Where to stay in Andorra for a family who dont want to ski but want to experience the snow and the mountains. Son %26amp; daughter(teenagers) would like to try snowboarding. Something typically Andorian? and alpine. Is this possible? Night life also important. Only for two nights. Advice %26amp; criticism welcome

|||

I would say Andorra la Vella, and rent a car so you can get around. You´ll probably have the most nightlife and options there.

Andorra? Yes or no?

Is it worth overnighting in Andorra during a whirlwind summer driving tour of Europe or should we motor on to Barcelona?

|||

We have been to Andorra twice. You can drive through in a few hours. If you rally want to see the true beauty of the County stay out of the City of Andorra. We spent 2 days in Ordino and it was beautiful.

|||

If you%26#39;re skiing or snowboarding, the resort of Grand Valira (and all the surrounding resort villages) are the best I%26#39;ve ever seen. Canillo is particularly quaint, and even once the snow is melted you can ride the gondollas up to the top for spectacular views. I recommed the Hotel Font D%26#39;Argent in Canillo for good ski packages at reasonable rates. The free turkish bath, sauna, food provisions and bar are great too.

|||

We are staying overnight and getting a agreat price for the hotel during the slow summer time season. I hope we did not make a mistake by staying there? We are staying at the Hesperia Andorra.

Hotel El Xalet (Crystal Chalet)

Just come back from El Tarter, stayed at Hotel El Xalet run by Crystal Holidays. It was absolutely terrible. Room tiny - couldn%26#39;t open the door to the balcony without moving the bed. Matresses and bed well past sell by date. Without going into the whole catalogue of things wrong, we and others had money stolen, the food was either just about ok or absolutely terrible. Don%26#39;t stay there. Have been to Soldeu/El Tarter 3 times and am going back again in 3 week, NOT to the El Xalet needless to say.

|||

read the above days before flying out to the Hotel El Xalet with Crystal Holidays, at the end of Feb, and so was expecting the worst.

When we arrived, we found the hotel clean and comfortable, it wasn%26#39;t 5star, but then we knew that when we booked! The staff were really great, helpful, and very child friendly. The food was cooked to a high standard, with separate sittings for the children if required, and importantly, the kitchen was clearly visable, and therefore open to scrutiny.

A fantastic holiday overall

|||

I stayed at hotel Xalet In soldeu for a week and can quite honestly say that I had half a good meal... bless them for trying but really... It was pants. My microwaveable x-mas pud was even still slightly frozen in the middle! I mean COME ON! All the staff, bar the chef, were absolutely fantastic though and it is a very child friendly hotel, except maybe the staircase... but the beer is good, the snow-boarding is great and theres a supermarket down the road that sells 200 ciggies for 8ish and 3 litres of Jack Daniels for 28ish so who gives a **** about the food.

The rooms could be alot better aswell. In our room there were power sockets hanging from the wall and the layout was really poor. But all in all I would probably go back there if not just to go out for a drink with the staff. A young chap named Carlos was really professional and after there were a few complaints about the food they really did try thier best to make up for the poor food but low and behold the chef let them down again... SACK HIM (he probably is sacked by now) Good holiday though.

I stayed at the Hotel El Xalet in March 2005 with my boyfriend. We had a great time, found our room to be of a good size and clean. The food was great and plenty of it and the staff were really friendly. I%26#39;m personally surprised to see a bad report on this Chalet! Okay it is up a bit of a hill, I%26#39;m not the fittest of people and I managed to get up it every day. There is a good pub on the way back from the slops, which most of the skier/snow boarder from El Xalet would go after a day on the slops and share stories. It is a sociable place to stay.

Just come back from this hotel was very worried because of the bad reviews. I can only say these people who have put bad stuff on are being very picky. We had the best time the rooms were great the staff were really friendly. The food was good what you expect if you only booked a 2star hotel. We were a big group and with lots of kids. The kids loved it and it was very safe, they had a courtyard outside which turned into a place they could play in the snow. We had the most amazing snowfall there on the friday night which we wondered if we would get of the mountain on the sunday trip home. Get Robin the crystal rep to take you over to pas de la casa we did it in 1 hour really good skiing...

would go back again

|||

Got to agree with Juliablackrun. It%26#39;s a value hotel! If you pay under £300 for a holiday including flights you%26#39;re not going to get a plush place to stay. But our room was good, beds were basic but comfy, TV, bathroom. Only picky things were small things that you%26#39;d feel churlish about complaining about (only 1 plug for bath and sink, bathroom lock not working - little things). Always warm, radiators to dry stuff.

Food was a bit odd - but it was all edible and generally well served up. The menu was up during the day so if you don%26#39;t fancy it you can pop out for a pizza or something. Bit confuse about the choice of food though. Some if it didn%26#39;t lend it%26#39;s self to mass catering.

The staff were young and friendly and the chef would always try to accomodate those who didn%26#39;t fancy that evenings offerings or kids meals etc. Fantastic fresh bread and butter!!!!

El Tarter isn%26#39;t the biggest place on the planet, but there are 3 or 4 bars, 2 supermarkets. The big plus was the Mesquite Bar - not a %26quot;brit pub%26quot;, it%26#39;s full of locals (staff and punters), great tapas and the restaurant side is good too, if a bit smokey!! The Stone Bar is the place to go for brit bonding, football etc.

Have to say that the Crystal Rep wasn%26#39;t the best. For instance it would have been nice to have been told that the 14th of March is a national holiday!! We were about to head all the way over to Andorra La Vella when we luckily found out that most of the shops would be closed. There%26#39;s also a cashpoint about 5 mins down the road in the Petrol Station that he wasn%26#39;t aware of. And to have a rep who can%26#39;t speak any/much of the local lingo isn%26#39;t the most professional. But he was very willing to take people out and about on the slopes. The transfer from Toulouse wasn%26#39;t too bad but they wait for several flights to come in from all over the UK and if one is late the rest have to wait - a whole bus sat for an hour waiting for 2 people on a late flight which was very frustrating. The return is always bad from these things, with 6 coaches of people all trying to check in at the airport at the same time (it goes with the type of holiday I%26#39;m afraid). Having said all that - we got there, we had a good time and we got back. I would have been gutted if we paid the full book price of £400ish - but for a lastminute deal for £270 it was spot on - deffo go again.

TIPS:

1) Use the free bus to get to La Vella - well worth it for cheap cameras etc. Great bar/restaurant called Mama Maria on the main drag - search it out.

2) Take the first bus to arrive if you%26#39;re going up to Soldeu - it%26#39;s only 1 euro! Not worth waiting for the free bus as they only come once an hour.

3) Fags %26amp; booze are as cheap in the local supermarket as La Vella so don%26#39;t go all that way for them.

4) Very %26quot;Boarding Friendly%26quot; resort. We avoided the dreaded button lifts for the whole time. No ski snobbery.

5) Pass is a bit pricey - £140. So make sure you try and explore the mountain - the rep was good at that - offering a guided tour of the mountains for free.

|||

We stayed here the first week in March, and as the oraniser of a fairly large group, i was fairly concerned when I read the reviews on here!

It was a pleasant surprise to find out that they couldn%26#39;t have been further from the truth! for a 2 star (yes, it%26#39;s a 2 star.. not a 5 Star) we got exactly what we would have expected. The rooms were comfy and always warm (a little too warm sometimes!) with all the cons you need (ie a bed, a light, and a loo!). Was always plenty of hot water for a soak in the bath after a day on the slopes, even if the door wouldn%26#39;t shut properly!

The food was always varied, and the chef always made an effort. I can sit here and say that every breakfast and evening meal we were served was demolished by my group without complaint. Always helps that there%26#39;s a couple of free glasses of wine to help!

The staff were young, friendly and always helpful. And the owner was always there to give us tips on bars and usually arranged a cheap taxi for us too.

My only niggle would be that all the floors are wooden and some people insisted on wearing their ski boots to go down the stairs and woke everyome up! and the rep was a bit useless with information, and just seemed to be making most of the stuff up.

All in all.. you will enjoy the el xalet unless you%26#39;re a snob who expects 5 star luxury for a 2star price. A big thankyou to everyone at the hotel for helping us have a fab hol!

|||

I think a lot may have changed since this review was written.

I went with a group by 5 people in February 2006 and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - yes the food was good some days and not so good on other days, but never terrible and we always enjoyed dinner!

The resort is fabulous - we had 1 beginner skier, 2 beginner boarders and 2 experienced skiers and everyone had a fantastic time with enough runs (and plenty of sun) to please everyone.

The Ski and board school that everyone attended (experienced skiers too) was by far the best we%26#39;ve ever been too (I%26#39;ve been to ski school twice before in Frnace and the others too). Fantastic guides and plenty of variety - Board School was pretty hard core for beginners - very challenging with some long distance stuff - over into the other resorts to keep us interested.

The skiers ended up in natural half-pipes themselves, so some really fun stuff.

Our rep wasn%26#39;t brilliant either I have to say. We actually won the chalet pub quiz one night but never got a prize because the rep seemed unable to come up with the goods.

The supermarket up the road sells FANTASTIC sausage, lethal Andorran spirits and is well worth a visit - if only for the free tastings!

Anyway, we%26#39;re planning to book now for next year - the chalet was great and didn%26#39;t disappoint at all and was in a great location. Far better than the French hols I%26#39;ve had previously.

cigarette/tobacco costs

will be near andorra la vella wonder if its worth driving into it to get cheap tobacco/cigarettes any1 kno the costs of these thanking you

|||

lambert and butler are about £13 in andorra.similar brands are about the same.cigarettes are cheaper than spain and france.but be warned you are only allowed an allowance of 200 to take back into spain or france.customs very strict in spain .expect to queue about an hour at customs.hope this helps john

excellent deal to arinsal

we have just booke an excellent deal to the hotel solano. www.directski.com

this company was cheaper than any others . also has anyone stayed in a superior room at the hotel solano ??/

|||

The reasons for getting such an excellent deal with directski.com will become clear as soon as you land! I travelled with them to Pas for the first time earlier this month and complete and utter unorganised chaos is how I would best describe them.

Luckily it was our third time in Pas so we knew the score but if we hadn%26#39;t been before their lack of information, incorrect ski-hire/lift pass kits, wrong times being posted for departure would have been a major issue.

Having said that I hope you have a great holiday, just don%26#39;t expect too much from the operator....we even had to load/unload our bags on the coach during the transfers!

|||

To the person who wouldn%26#39;t go with directski again - I am looking to go on first ski holiday and find it completely complicated and mind blowing. Who do you generally book with and how can you be confident of having snow? Thanks for any help.

|||

Hi there, it pretty much depends what you%26#39;re after to be honest and how much you have to pay.

I can say that I saw lots of Neilsons, Panorama, Thomsons, First Choice reps out and about - particularly helping people with ski-hire and ski-school on the first couple of days. DirectSki are fine as long as you know where you%26#39;re going. Last year one of my party had a bad accident and we traveeled with Panorama who were fantastic re filling out the insurance forms, arranging transport home, trying to get us moved to a hotel with a lift etc.

As far as snow goes its pretty much a lottery! I was in Pas at the start of Feb and there was loads of snow, a couple of weeks before the pistes were practically bare. Equally I know people who go to Canada for the %26#39;guarantee%26#39; and find there%26#39;s too much snow and the avalanch risk means pistes are closed!

I generally work on the theory that if you aim for Feb/March in Europe you should be fine for snow.

Hope that helps!

|||

Hi Gooner,

We booked an awesome deal through directski.com earlier this year and had an awesome time. The reps were friendly and helpful and the snow fluffy. What more could I ask for?

If you really want to keep the cost of your trip down I recommend avoiding all the directski add-ons such as pre-booked lessons, insurance and equipment hire. Instead shop around for these elsewhere on the internet.

For ski/board hire prebook on www.teletext.co.uk - it works out at approx £25 for a weeks board %26amp; boot hire.

For travel insurance try moneysupermarket.com

- I got winter sport cover for £12

We stayed self-catering at the Club Diana Apartments. It was a little out of town but well equipped, clean and spacious. We even got a maid.

On the downside the pistes are a bit limited for intermediate to expert skiiers, but great for practicing.

Have a great time

|||

just don%26#39;t expect too much from the operator....we even had to load/unload our bags on the coach during the transfers!

!!!!!!The reps duties do not include loading bags on to the coach!!!!!!!!!!!!

Walking in soldeu

Hi,

have not been to Andorra before and am thinking of going on a walking holiday based in Soldeu around August. We are thinking of going with Inghams.

Me and the other half are reasonably fit and enjoy a bit of hiking but not all day foot-numbing ascents.

Anyone got any experiences of walking around Soldeu, best/worst hotels in summer etc?

I have heard Andorra is a bit overdeveloped - anyone agree with that who has been there?

Thanks in advance,

Jonathan Shields

|||

I have a walking map of Andorra from when I went on an Inghams holiday to Arinsal last summer - will take a look at the choice of walks from Soldeu if you get back to me.

Arinsal was in a very steep valley and the walks were far from easy but everyone said Soldeu was much better for the casual walker.

It%26#39;s a great little country and make sure you leave time to visit the capital Andorra La Vella for shopping. Careful what you buy though as they will check your bags when you enter Spain.

A word of warning is that the transfer from Barcelona is a very long way (4 hours) and Inghams do use minibuses. We were lucky to have a coach each time, but I couldn%26#39;t imagine being on a minibus in August for 4 hours.....

|||

Soldeu in Summer is great. We went with Inghams 2 years ago %26amp; are going back this summer. We stayed (%26amp; will stay again) at the Piolets Park %26amp; Spa at the bottom of the village. Lovely room, great food %26amp; wine.

The Aspen Bar is pleasant in the evenings and they have some connection with Inghams/Crystal %26amp; operate a minibus to take you to the start of popular walks and bring you home again in the afternoon (for a small fee!). The gondola up at the Hotel Sport is open some weeks in the summer which makes for an easy ascent/descent (I thought the lift pass was expensive though) and there is plenty of fantastic walking in all the nearby valleys.

Soldeu was really tiny 2 years ago but there was some building going on. I expect it to be a little more built up. However Soldeu is primarily a ski resort, in Summer it should still be very quiet.

If you like horse riding there is a stable 50-100 yds down from the hotel. There%26#39;s downhill mountain biking available too!

How long does it take to drive?

From France town Peripignan to Andorra in July, how long does it take?

I have read that parking is difficult.

I want to e-mail the tourist office but I can not find the address. Can someone help me?

Thank you

|||

Tourist info, try this website www.turisme.ad/ang/home/marc.asp…

Then click on the @ sign, and it will open up a page with a form you can fill out for more info.

|||

N116 towards Prades is a very fast road. If you are self catering stop at the supermarket here to stock up. The road narrows after Prades. Allow some time to stop a Villefranche-de-Conflent. This is a small walled town well worth an hour or two. Continue on this road and you will eventually see signs to Andorra. I can%26#39;t help you beyond Fort Romeu for the roads, but you will pass through a 3 mile tunnel.

Autoroute shows it as 100 miles.

Are you doing this as a day trip ? If not Ryanair to Gerona is nearly always cheaper than Perpignan.

|||

Andorra (capital) is basically one long duty-free shopping street so I wdn%26#39;t bother if it%26#39;s for a day-trip. Concentrate on Villefranche-sur-Conflent and Montlouis instead.

If it%26#39;s for a longer stay and flying to girona is an option, the drive will take you longer as it%26#39;s a lot further and a less straightforward route .

|||

Why are you wanting to go to Andorra - for duty free a look around or what? Spain is as cheap as Andorra for most obvious stuff - booze etc - and almost as cheap for tobacco.

Bear in mind Andorra is a country with several towns and lots of villages, so the %26quot;parking is difficult%26quot; comment doesn%26#39;t make a lot of sense; a bit like saying it%26#39;s difficult to park in Tyneside...

Ski School

Trying to book some lessons for a holiday in Soldeu in February 2007. Does anyone know the name of the ski school there. I have been told it is esf but cannot find anything on the net.

|||

esf is Ecole de Ski Francais.

Doesn%26#39;t look like there is one of those in Soldeu

weather in Andorra

Hi

I am going to Andorra hiking and camping in early september could anyone advise me of the weather conditions at this time of year, am hoping to travel light.

Thanks travellerinfrance

|||

Having only recently familiarised ourselves with Andorra as I%26#39;m visiting regularly now, August, for example, was very varied in the day - 22-32 centigrade, but fell quite low on a night, even though it%26#39;s summer, and with regular torrential rain in the evenings. Early September is expected to be in the early %26#39;20%26#39;s (22-25) but bear in mind the higher you go the colder it can get!

Hotel Euro Ski (Soldeu - El Tarter) to Andorra La Vella

Hi All,

We have booked holidays to Andorra from 10th December to 17th December. We will be staying at Hotel Euro Ski in the Soldeu-El Tarter area.

Just wondering what the snowfall could be like in December in that area based on previous years? We are also thinking of travelling to Andorra La Vella for shopping for a day, can I ask how long does it take to travel there, and by what means? Would it be worth travelling all the way there or are there any shopping places near where we are staying?

Any help would be much appreciated. :) Thanks!

|||

I can%26#39;t find Andorra, but the reports for the French Pyrenean resorts will give you some idea.

www.skiinfo.com

It only takes about 30 minutes to drive from one end of Andorra to the other

himalaia

has anyone stayed there ? am just about to book for the new year?

|||

Skibunny2,

I stayed at the Himalaya in Pas in 2001/2002 season.

I found it very good. The pool got a little busy with children at times, but you can soon workout when they eat and go then.

Service was good, prices for drinks and extra snacks were reasonable.

I%26#39;d recommend it. I%26#39;m in twio minds myself wether to go to France or Andorra this year. I%26#39;d like to finish off the Tignes runs (cut short by a broken wrist last time).

Hope that helps.

Gavin.

Driving from Barcelona..Suggestions??

i%26#39;m staying in Barcelona for a week..sep 21 to 28...can i drive into andorra for a day trip?..or is i woth staying overnight?

where are the best duty free deals...and for what..?

thanks in advance...

|||

Barcelona to Andorra is about 120 miles. It should take less than 3 hours along the E9. The journey is much better than the destination.

|||

Andorra is absolutely worth the trip, though it is a long drive. If you drive in for the day, leave Barcelona early so you can spend tas much time as possible there. I suggest you drive right thru the country and stop in the towns on the way back I particularly recommned Ordino and Les Escaldes. The best duty free shoppong is in Andorra de Vella. You can stop here on your way out. You will find alot of designer and luxury goods. We didn%26#39;t shop streets are very crowded, and there are loads of shops, parking is very difficlt here just park in a lot.This is NOT the prettiest part of the country.If you really want to shop alot plus see the counrty and enjoy the food Adoorra would be a good overnight stay. We have been back a few times since our first day trip . Enjoy your trip.

|||

Just to add a bit to what Eve said . . . Andorra is great! We did a day trip from Barcelona a few years ago. It is a long ride ( 3 hours). You can drive through the entire Country on the main road in less than an hour. You can see as the small Country changes from Spanish to French. Near the French boarder you are high up in the mountains and there are some beautiful views.

The capital is where most of the duty free stores are found. I was not particularly impressed by the City or the %26quot;bargains.%26quot; The alcohol is a good price as well as the tobacco (if you smoke).

We went back 2 years ago and stayed in Ordino. It was beautiful! I would recommend it if you like to hike or at least drive through beautiful Country. Remember you are in the hear of the Pyrennes.

We plan to spend a few days in Andorra is 2008.

Of course, make sure you see all of Barcelona. A shorter day trip is the beach resort of Sitges. Check the Web to see what iot is like in September.

skiing pas de la casa

me and my mates are goin 2 pas de la casa jan 2006 just woundering if any1 knows nething about the hotel envalira its bright yellow if it helps also how cheap is the booze out there? wots it like 4 women? is there any nightclubs? is there any rules bout takin booze and goods over the boarder 4 wen getting a plane home?

|||

i can just tell - you will love it. booze in the bars is not that cheap but big measures, in the shops it is really cheap. normal restrictions on bringing bottles home and very likely you will be searched at EU boarder if you know what i mean!!! loads of loud, late clubs with plenty of brits making twats of themselves. sure you will love it

|||

Hey, when abouts in Jan you going? Me and my friends are going 26th Dec to 2nd of jan. Were all really excited! x

|||

mate` ull love it its amazing out there the skiing isnt the greatest in the world but the night life and apre%26#39; ski are proberly the best in the world wen u ge there head to tupis resturant for some great food and then over to pady%26#39;s for a quick beer hen who ever has some energy left head into the underground nightclub its fantastic that or excess crack i go to pas with about 30 freinds every year purley for the crack were off in march cant wait so enjoy!

Work

Hey...i am due to go to andorra to work over the winter as a ski rep and i have never been to andorra...can anyone let me know whether the apres ski is any good here?? im not sure which resort i am going to and is there a particular resort i should avoid...particular as i am looking for the more lively busy places..im gonna be there over xmas and new year so can anybody let me know what the atmospheres usually like and the men??!! well gotta get myself a xmas kiss havent i??!

Thanks

xx

|||

Hey

Which company are you repping with? Have you repped before? Obviously Pas de la Casa is the busy resort with a lively apres scene, plenty of clubs (Ibiza on ice they call it...) It%26#39;s a good resort if you like a hectic social life - just dont burn out! Soldeu is a but more family orientated and upmarket, still enough to do in the evenings (work should keep you busy anyway) and if you are friends with the reps in pas you can always escape over there for the odd night out (but not have to live in such a full on resort), Tarter is a tiny hamlet next to Soldeu, really out of the way and really family orientated, difficult to sell to guests as they cant be bothered leaving the hamlet. Arinsal is close to a really good ski area (forgot the name now, its been a while), bit of a local secret, but prepare to be isolated out there as the village isnt huge. On the other hand the bars will look out for you as you will be in the few bars alot over the course of a season.

No matter which company you work for prepare for awful transfer days (about 4 hours to the airport........) At least you can have a snooze on the way there - if your drunk guests arent puking everywhere. Only joking (well sort of), you will have an awesome time - what level skier/boarder are you?

|||

Hey thanx for that...i am a mytravel rep and i am working for panarama this season...i am a level zero skier and boarder as i have only skied in total a month in my whole life so need a bit of practice!! but hopefully they should sort out ski school for me and obviously all the others lacking in the ability to ski!! i cant wait and its funny you should say ibiza on ice coz i have ibiza for my summer season next year as a placement so should get in lots of practice in andorra b4 i head over to the capital of alcohol abuse! The thing with being a rep is that you get told which resort you are working in, you dont get to just choose...which can be a good thing becoz they do it suited on your ability as a skier i would imagine and also your personality...i want the lively area so pas de la casa sounds ideal..be good if i get that..cannot wait its gonna be wicked

are you a rep or just a keen skier/holiday maker?? whats the talent like??!!

Cheers!

x

|||

Pas de la Casa is the livliest with the best nightlife...and as for the men, its nickname is %26#39;Mandorra%26#39;

|||

You%26#39;re not there is february by any chance are you?

|||

|||

|||

I%26#39;m coming over with a mate, I%26#39;m male, 28. Staying in Pas de la Casa, not sure which hotel yet. Free drinks sounds promising, its usually me providing the drinks.

|||

Felugas and Afterburners especially welcome. I%26#39;ve been told snow is the best hangover cure which is why they have drinks like that
