I%26#39;m an experienced driver with a small amount of experience using the right hadn side of the road. So I%26#39;m thinking I might take a hire car from Barcelona airport to Soldeu. But I presume the car won%26#39;t come with chains, so am I going to kill myself on snowy roads?! Is the drive a straight forward or complex one?

See the Jan 16 post %26quot;Driving Directions from
Barcelona%26quot;... it pretty well answers your questions.

Did it a couple of years ago (usually fly into Girona). Once you are out of the city then it is an easy run. There are a couple of toll tunnels. Tolls in Europe accept credit cards. Some car hire firms do chains so ask when you pick the car up. If they don%26#39;t hire chains, you will be able to buy a set at any supermarket on your way (I think there is a large one at Baga), or at the service station at the tunnel just after. Make sure you try them on as soon as you get them. Better to learn how to fit them in the warm and dry than in the middle of a snow storm.
Route
C-32
E-9
At the N260 either
Right to Bourg-Madame and cross into France. Then the E09 to Andorra
or
Left to the N-145 and into Andorra
When you hire a car check if there is additional insurance for taking the car out of Spain. Most seem to be doing this now at 7 or 8 € per day. Also try and get one which does full to full for the fuel or you will end up giving away half a tank. If you need to return the car with a full tank, fill up in Andorra. Fuel is much cheaper there.

Def. take chains just in case it%26#39;s bad. Check out the price of hiring chains versus buying, it may be cheaper to buy and give them away afterwards. I live near Barcelona and it%26#39;s an easy 3 hour drive to Andorra. I have just returned from Arinsal and petrol was exactly the same price as Spain, in fact more expensive than my local supermarket.
Good advice from Cello. Refuse to rent unless they allow a full- full tank. They charge about 30% over the odds for a tank and you end up taking it back with fuel still in it. Get it in writing on an email and print it off to take with you because they will deny all knowledge of the agreement at the pick up point and load your credit card with the cost of a full tank.
